I moved to Girdwood in 1986 following a long held dream of living there. I grew up in Seward, went to University of Alaska Fairbanks in the 70s during the pipeline era, and was a true weekend warrior skier back when chairs 4 and 1 were really the only games in town. After earning my Bachelor’s in Psychology I became the Community Schools Coordinator in Seward from 79-82, and also worked in the same capacity at Tudor Elementary in Anchorage from 82-86.

When, then coordinator, Susie Barnett, decided to move to Juneau I applied to Girdwood and because of my rural background in Seward snagged the job. My other major vocation was commercial fishing, first in Cook Inlet, then in Bristol Bay. In 1992 I studied for my real estate license and I and my business partner, Loretta, opened our own long term property management business, Girdwood Property Management, Inc. (very original).

I was a stay at home dad in the winters and commercial fished in the summers. When the salmon market went south for a time I hung my licensee in Anchorage as an Associate Broker at Next Home Real Estate. I started out selling primarily Anchorage, and since our office was downtown I became very fond and familiar with real estate in that area. With time, folks we managed property for in Girdwood started asking for our help in sales and the business grew to include both long term rental management and sales. This was complimented by Girdwood Cleaning Company so we could insure that both rentals and sales were cleaned the way they should be, before changing hands.

Since those earlier years I have sold property in many areas of the state including such places as; St. Mary’s, Dutch Harbor, Kodiak, Seward, and Kenai. We’ve sold many different types of properties including; condos, homes, warehouses, multi family properties, and lodges. Our primary focus until recently was Girdwood. Having lived there for 30 years you get to know a town. All of our three children went to school K- 12 grades there and I have served both on the Girdwood Community School Board and Girdwood Board of Supervisors as well as being currently involved on the Alaska Mutliple Listing Service Board of Directors and I serve the Anchorge Board of Realtors as a member of the Professional Standards Committee.

All this means really is that I have been around and have the long view on most things real estate related. In my next post I will talk a little bit about why the Girdwood market is unique and some reasons why both Buyers and Sellers may want to consider using a local real estate professional when Buying and Selling as opposed to someone from outside the area or selling on your own or representing yourself as a Buyer. I am just starting to get serious about this blogging thing so feel free to contact me, or fill out the form below. Suggestions are always appreciated and I will respond to anyone who takes the time to email about this blog.
